Cet univers vit en complète autarcie, le gaspillage est considéré comme le crime majeur, les bouches inutiles sont automatiquement éliminées. Les hommes mènent une existence de robots, réglée par des lois impitoyables et inhumaines dictées par la machine électronique "Psycho". Le drame va naître de la désignation par erreur d'Eddy Burns, officier de la Psycho-police. Des incidents troublants, un grave complot, la mise en question de l'infaillibilité de Psycho, une intrigue amoureuse (entre Suzanne, la seule femme et Burns) mènent vers le dénouement, moment où la population du vaisseau spatial retrouvera le chemin d'une humanité nouvelle.
